{"id":144,"date":"2017-03-03T11:20:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-03T11:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/?p=144"},"modified":"2017-03-03T16:42:44","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T16:42:44","slug":"race-day-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/index.php\/2017\/03\/03\/race-day-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"Race Day Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p><\/p>Along with 600 other runners, I\u2019ve been busily readying myself for the Debra Ireland Wicklow Mountains Half Marathon &amp; 11K races this coming Sunday, 5<sup>th<\/sup> March.\n<p>\u00c1 la TodayFM\u2019s Dermot &amp; Dave, I\u2019ve got a bit of a case of the \u201cshould\u2019ves\u201d\u2026 I should\u2019ve planned better, I should\u2019ve done more training, I should\u2019ve gotten up earlier to squeeze in extra runs and so on\u2026 Well, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ll break the 2 hour 30 minutes I\u2019d hoped, but at this stage, rest and nutrition will help me a whole lot more than worrying about what I did or didn\u2019t do!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/BodhiClinic\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-148 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/bodhi-300x284.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"127\" height=\"120\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/bodhi-300x284.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/bodhi.png 316w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 127px) 100vw, 127px\" \/><\/a>A friend of mine, <strong><em>Neasa Kenny of Bodhi Clinic<\/em><\/strong> in Gorey, Co. Wexford recommended this amazing smoothie for your race day preparations. As always, you should try this out in advance to see if it suits your particular gut!! The last thing you want on Sunday is to dive for the bushes\u2026 Gorse is not very comfortable to poo in!! You could of course save it for your post-race recovery drink \u2013 or do both!<\/p>\n<h1>Get Up &amp; Go Green Smoothie<\/h1>\n<h4>Ingredients for 4 smoothies:<\/h4>\n<p>These can be prepared in advance &amp; frozen, ready for mornings when you\u2019re short on time!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-159\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-300x300.jpeg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0666-01-370x370.jpeg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 bags baby leaf spinach<\/li>\n<li>2 bananas<\/li>\n<li>1 pineapple<\/li>\n<li>1 cucumber<\/li>\n<li>4 avocados<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use straight from the freezer-just add liquid of choice (water\/coconut water\/dairy-free milk) or take out 20 minutes before you plan on blending it. In my case, because my blender is just pathetic, I had to add my chosen milk (coconut &amp; almond) to help the blender get going!! I <em>NEED<\/em> a new blender!!<\/p>\n<h4>The reasons why Neasa recommends this smoothie:<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-164 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-150x150.jpeg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMAG0671_BURST002-01-1-370x370.jpeg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As well as monounsaturated, cholesterol-lowering good fats, <strong>avocados<\/strong> provide runner-friendly essential nutrients, including vitamin E, potassium, vitamin K, B-vitamins, fibre and folic acid, which will support you on the road and with recovery. Potassium is an essential electrolyte, which helps control muscle (including heart) contractions. Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body, which we produce an increased amount of from running.<\/p>\n<p>Iron, protein, Vitamin A, C, and K are all found in <strong>spinach<\/strong>, whereas <strong>bananas<\/strong> are a great source of easy-to-digest carbohydrates \u2013 this makes them particularly useful for a fast energy boost. Not to mention the high level of potassium which prevents cramps! I find bananas tend to repeat on me if I eat them before a run, so I was interested to see how this recipe would work for me with half a banana for each smoothie. I had one banana burp, but I literally drank the smoothie on the drive to my running location. Pineapples are packed with the enzyme bromelain which plays a major role in the body\u2019s healing process. According to a 1995 German study, states Neasa, bromelain is very effective in treating bruises, sprains and strains by reducing swelling, tenderness and pain.<\/p>\n<p>Because <strong>cucumbers<\/strong> are made up of mostly water, and full of important electrolytes, they are a perfect food to add to your smoothie to keep you hydrated. I don\u2019t know about you, but that certainly makes it worth a try!! I also threw in a few\u00a0<strong>chia seeds<\/strong> because I think you can never get enough of those!
