Psychologically gearing yourself up for any sort of run or hike is probably the most difficult aspect of your workout! And regardless of whether other people admit it or not, <em>everyone<\/em> feels that initial dread \u2013 at least some of the time.\n<p>We all know the reasons WHY we should run. But let\u2019s be honest with ourselves\u2026 That just isn\u2019t motivation enough when you\u2019re just about getting through each day.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a working mother running around cooking for kids, checking homework, ferrying them to their own activities. YES, they <em>do<\/em> have far better social lives than us!! Who else (in the real world!) has a personal driver, chef, tutor, manager\u2026 Getting your own kit ready when there\u2019s so much else that needs doing just seems monumental.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so much easier to sit down and eat dinner with your family, chill-out on the sofa in the evenings or spend the quiet time in the morning with the snooze button or a coffee before all hell breaks loose! Even if you\u2019re not a parent, it\u2019s still very easy to come up with a million and one reasons that you haven\u2019t possibly got the time for a run.<\/p>\n<p>You know what? You\u2019re lying to yourself. You do have time. You do. You just need to convince yourself to get ready and get out there. Go wild!<\/p>\n<p>So, here are some ideas on how to trick yourself into going for a run!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-55 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/clothesbed3-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/clothesbed3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/clothesbed3-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/clothesbed3-370x370.png 370w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/clothesbed3.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>1. Wear your running clothes to bed.<\/h5>\n<p>Maybe leave your heart rate monitor in its\u2019 box for this, but seriously, I have done this and when you get up the next morning and you\u2019re already in your running gear, you will feel really awful about yourself if you don\u2019t go. I know, because I\u2019ve also done this\u2026. I felt so bad I ran the next day though!! So it works!! Hah!<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/easyrun3-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/easyrun3-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/easyrun3-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/easyrun3-370x370.png 370w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/easyrun3.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>2. Decide on an easy run.<\/h5>\n<p>If you decide every day that you\u2019ll do an easy run and start with a slow jog, very slow \u2013 I\u2019m talking warm up pace here, nose breathing only pace\u2026. So slow that you\u2019ll be itching to run! After that, it\u2019s up to you!<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-72 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/runlauteret640-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/runlauteret640-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/runlauteret640-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/runlauteret640-370x370.png 370w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/runlauteret640.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>3. Run somewhere nice.<\/h5>\n<p>Okay, so weekly running in the alps is a bit of a stretch I know, but get yourself to a park, the beach, a woodland, a hill \u2013 anywhere that\u2019s closer to nature (and softer underfoot!) than the concrete jungle.<\/p>\n<h5>4. Record yourself.<\/h5>\n<p>I\u2019m not talking about recording your runs, although that\u2019s great too and there are lots of apps to do that for you. I mean actually record your voice. Pause during\/after your run and say how you are feeling about yourself, your run, your environment. It will <strong><em>reinforce positive self-beliefs<\/em><\/strong> and you can play it back to yourself when you are getting ready for your next run. We are always delighted with ourselves when we\u2019ve gotten off our butts aren\u2019t we??<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-74 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smyles640-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\">5. Sign up for a charity race.<\/h5>\n<p>Preferably choose a charity that\u2019s close to your heart and try to also rope in some friends. It doesn\u2019t matter what the distance is, but make it a realistic, achievable goal. Racing for charity is a fantastic way to guilt yourself into some training!<\/p>\n<h5>6. Tell everyone.<\/h5>\n<p>Tell everyone about your upcoming charity race, yes. But also tell everyone when you\u2019re going for a run. Either physically \u2013 at work etc. or via social media. Never mind the critics! I don\u2019t really care who likes or doesn\u2019t like that I run. I tell people because I want myself to be held accountable. I\u2019m hoping that someone might ask me \u2013 \u201cHey, how\u2019d your run go last night?\u201d\u00a0So, if you know someone who always posts their workouts, maybe it\u2019s just a little kick and a little support they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/msr640-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/msr640-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/msr640-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/msr640-370x370.png 370w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/msr640.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>7. Join a club.<\/h5>\n<p>I was never a club person. And a running club? With actual real runners?? Talk about intimidating!! I wanted to be running 5km in under 30 minutes before I joined. LOL! I\u2019m happy to admit, I\u2019m an idiot. I did eventually join a club. I only had time to run in the evenings and was too scared to run on the trails alone in the dark, so for that reason only, I joined a club. However, it has become so much more since. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mudsweatandrunners\/\">Mud, Sweat and Runners<\/a> has not only forced me out the door, but has encouraged me along, waited for me when I found the going tough and introduced me to a whole range of new people.<\/p>\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MeandKlaudia-150x150.png\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MeandKlaudia-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MeandKlaudia-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MeandKlaudia-370x370.png 370w, https:\/\/gowild.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MeandKlaudia.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>8. Arrange to meet someone.<\/h5>\n<p>Make it someone who is relying on you to turn up \u2013 whether it\u2019s dark out, they are helping you improve, you are helping them improve (it\u2019s motivating to motivate others!!), whatever. Make an arrangement and agree not to text each other with excuses. Just turn up. On a recent stormy night, I had agreed to meet a friend in the nearby national park. It was absolutely lashing down. I couldn\u2019t tell you how many times I picked up the phone to text her and cancel. But I didn\u2019t. She laughed when I told her, because she had done the same thing!
